And now for something completely different.

I don’t normally do portraits. FACES ARE HARD. So I leave that to those for whom it comes easily. It’s always important to paint your passion. Faces are not my passion. That said, I was contacted by a local buyer who found my website by Googling “Las Vegas Artists Portraits”. HUH??? No clue. I have never advertised as a portrait artist and don’t recall having any references to portraiture on my site, blog, or Facebook.

Anyway, she sends me a request for commission pricing as well as a photograph of her daughter, the subject. The photograph matched the painting above, very well taken, perfect lighting and composition. And look at that awesome bonnet.

Now here’s the part where I sound like a terrible, awful, horribly superficial person. This kid is ridiculously cute. She has the kind of features that arch and curve and flow effortlessly. She is a portrait artist’s dream subject. For people like me who practically tremble in fear at the thought of painting a portrait, my job couldn’t be any easier than with her face. So I took the job. And I had a lovely time painting her portrait. But, no, I don’t think I’ll be doing another portrait any time soon.

SO WE SAW THE IMPALA EARLIER AND WE KINDA FREAKED OUT

For a brief moment in time, around 1980, first season of Magnum P.I., I lived in Hawaii. I was just a wee little thing, too young to actually care. The show was filming down the street from our house. My mother, an avid fan of Tom Selleck, dragged me down to the set to watch him, along with half the neighborhood. Everyone, including security, was too busy guarding Tom to notice as I willfully disobeyed the “no touching” sign and left clammy little kid handprints all over the side of Magnum’s Ferrari. Soon after, they needed to pull the car into a spot in the sun for filming. Again, distracted by the crowds, no one paid attention to the very obvious marks I left. The scene was shot, the set dismantled, and the crew took off. A few short months later, the episode for which this scene was filmed appeared on our TV screen, and there was Magnum, fighting a bad guy on the hood of the Ferrari. And there were my handprints on the driver’s side door, glistening brightly, distracting the viewing audience. I say this because my mother paused from her ardent gasping during the fight scene to comment on the dirty smudges on the car, not realizing they were left there by her brat of a daughter.

So, fast forward to today. Were I to find myself in this parking lot, next to the Impala, would I try to do the same? Yep. I may be older, but I’m none the wiser.

Okay, Laurie. Top that.
